About Childcare Cost Calculator
Childcare Cost Calculator is a free, independent tool built by Dinnr LLC to help parents make informed decisions about childcare spending. We believe every family deserves transparent, data-driven cost information — without paywalls, registration walls, or hidden agendas.
Our Mission
Childcare is the single largest expense for many American families — often exceeding housing costs. Yet reliable, localized cost data is surprisingly hard to find. Parents are left guessing, or relying on outdated word-of-mouth estimates.
We built this calculator to solve that problem. Our goal is to give every parent a clear picture of what childcare actually costs in their area, across all major care types, including the tax savings most families don't know they qualify for.
What Makes Us Different
- Five care types compared side-by-side — daycare centers, in-home daycare, full-time nannies, nanny shares, and au pairs. Most tools only cover one or two.
- Zip code-level precision — We map costs to 50+ metro areas using 3-digit zip code prefixes, not vague state averages.
- Tax savings included — We calculate your Dependent Care FSA savings, Child & Dependent Care Credit, FICA savings, and state-specific tax benefits automatically.
- State subsidy eligibility — We flag state childcare assistance programs you may qualify for based on your location.
- No account required — Calculate, share, export, and print your results without signing up for anything.
Our Data Sources
We compile cost data from multiple authoritative sources and update it annually:
- Care.com 2024 Cost of Care Survey — National survey of 27,000+ families on childcare spending patterns
- U.S. Department of Labor National Database of Childcare Prices — County-level pricing data from licensed childcare providers
- Economic Policy Institute (EPI) Child Care Costs by State — State-by-state cost analysis with demographic breakdowns
- UrbanSitter National Childcare Rate Survey — Real-time rate data from nannies and caregivers across major metros
- IRS Publication 503 — Current tax rules for Dependent Care FSA limits, Child & Dependent Care Credit percentages, and FICA rates
- State Departments of Social Services — Eligibility criteria and income limits for state childcare subsidy programs
Our Methodology
Regional costs are mapped to 50+ metropolitan areas using 3-digit zip code prefixes. For each metro, we maintain cost data across four age groups (infant, toddler, preschool, school-age) and five care types. Tax calculations use current federal brackets and rules. State-specific subsidies are sourced directly from each state's administering agency.
All figures are estimates based on aggregated data. Actual costs vary by specific provider, neighborhood within a metro area, hours and days needed, and individual circumstances. We recommend using our estimates as a starting point and getting quotes from local providers for exact pricing.
